John Smith and BRUTE … A Quarter Century of Excellence

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 4, 2012
2012 marks the 25th year that John Smith has been an influential member of Team BRUTE. Smith played an integral part in the development of many of Brute’s successful products and the John Smith Signature Line of Sublimated Singlets and Wrestling Footwear have consistently been at the forefront of performance and style.

John Smith has become synonymous with excellence through his accomplishments as both a wrestler and coach. As an athlete, Smith was twice a Gold Medalist at the Summer Games, the Pan-American Games, the Goodwill Games, and twice an NCAA Individual Champion. Smith has also won an unprecedented six World Championships. Smith’s accomplishments as a wrestler have earned him places in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the FILA Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, and recognition as a member of the NCAA 75th Anniversary Team.

Smith was destined to transition into coaching due to his passion for the sport of wrestling and his drive to assist in the development of the young athletes following in his footsteps. As Head Coach of Oklahoma State University’s Wrestling Program, Smith has led the Cowboys to five NCAA Championships and twelve Conference Championships. Smith became the all-time winningest coach at Oklahoma State and currently has a record of 328-47-6. Under Smith’s tutelage, 24 Cowboys have become NCAA Individual Champions and 95 have become NCAA All-Americans.

Smith’s champion attitude and vision has often provided BRUTE with input in regards to the incorporation of new materials and patterns for wrestling singlets. Smith was the first athlete to promote Lycra singlets when Brute began producing singlets in the revolutionary material. John Purnell, President and CEO of BRUTE, shared one of the immense steps BRUTE took in the wrestling industry with Smith’s assistance. “BRUTE was able to introduce the Sublimated Singlet to the world on its grandest stage when John won the 1988 Gold Medal in the singlet BRUTE designed for the momentous occasion. Since then, sublimation has dominated the wrestling apparel industry and today’s singlets would not be possible without the huge step BRUTE and John Smith took together.”

Smith speaks in high regard about his partnership with Brute. “In 1988, during the Olympic training center I met John Purnell for the first time and I found a true connection with a person and company as passionate about wrestling as I am; John Purnell and his associates at Brute remain the most passionate company in the world for helping wrestlers perform to their highest level while giving back to our sport via their REACHES non-profit organization” said Smith. Smith’s signature has adorned BRUTE wrestling footwear that merged ingenuity with popular style. Through Smith and BRUTE’s dedication to wrestling gear that excel in performance and durability, John Smith Signature footwear was the favored choice for wrestlers everywhere.

Where Smith’s career has led him, BRUTE followed. BRUTE strives to provide assistance and financial backing to the various activities that Smith has become a part of. With Smith currently the Head Coach for Oklahoma State University, BRUTE supports him by sponsoring the program with their entire line of wrestling products. Smith runs and organizes several wrestling camps throughout the calendar year and BRUTE’s silver anniversary present to Smith is to help increase the camps’ reach.

The relationship between BRUTE and John Smith has the resources, ability, and star power to help increase the popularity of the sport of wrestling and propel American wrestling to the heights of success achieved during Smith’s career as a wrestler.
